Lighthouse History

The Crooked River Lighthouse, also known as the Carrabelle Light, holds a rich history that dates back to 1895. Its journey began as a replacement for the Dog Island Light, which was unfortunately destroyed by a hurricane in 1875. Located on the mainland, the Crooked River Lighthouse served as the rear range light for the channel to the west of Dog Island, catering to ships in the lumber trade. Over the years, the Crooked River Lighthouse underwent significant changes. In 1933, it was electrified and became automated, no longer requiring a Keeper.

Despite being decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1995, the Crooked River Lighthouse’s story did not end there. Thanks to the passion and dedication of the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association, the lighthouse was saved from being auctioned off. The CLA worked to preserve and restore this historic landmark with support from various grants and fundraising efforts. Restoration efforts have included the installation of the original lens, crafted in Paris, France, in 1894. Today, the Crooked River Lighthouse stands as a proud landmark to the unwavering determination of its keepers and the supportive community that surrounds it. Step inside, explore the museum and let the captivating history of the Crooked River Lighthouse transport you to another era.

Lens Exhibit

The Crooked River Lighthouse has a rich history tied to its iconic Fresnel lens. Manufactured by the renowned French lens and clockmaker Henry Lepaute in France, the 4th Order Bivalve Fresnel Lens is a rare and unique piece made of brass and glass prism rings. In 1895, it was placed atop the Crooked River Lighthouse’s newly assembled tower, becoming the mariners’ guiding light. However, in 1976, the lens was removed from the tower due to mercury leakage from the rotating mechanism. On February 19th, 2020, the Crooked River Lighthouse 4th-order Fresnel lens was finally brought home, initiating the process of research, creation, fabrication, and manufacturing of artifacts and exhibits to showcase this unique piece of history.

After almost 50 years, on January 13th, 2023, the original lens equipped with a replica burner was revived and relit, now rotated by a modern electric motor and illuminated by a 25-watt bulb. In celebration of this remarkable restoration, a new exhibit opened to the public on February 4th, 2023, in the Crooked River Lighthouse Keeper’s House Museum. The one-of-a-kind lens is housed in a specially crafted steel lighthouse display case that mimics the upper portion of the tower room. This interactive exhibit highlights the history of lenses and mariner communication, allowing visitors to marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship and intricate details of the original first-order Fresnel lens, a true demonstration of the skill and artistry of its creation.
